Mandated Reporters
Are you a mandated reporter of child sexual abuse?
Michigan Child Protection Law (CPL) requires the reporting of child abuse and neglect by certain persons, called mandated reporters, and permits the reporting of child abuse and neglect by all persons. Mandated reporters are an essential part of the child protection system because they have an enhanced capacity, through their expertise and direct contact with children, to identify suspected child abuse and neglect. Reports made by mandated reporters are confirmed at nearly double the rate of those made by non-mandated reporters.
Reports of suspected child abuse or neglect should be made to the Department of Health and Human Services, Children’s Protective Services (CPS) by filing a report online or calling 1-855-444-3911. You may also call your local law enforcement agency and in an emergency, dial 9-1-1.
If a child tells you they’ve been abused, it is critical to listen carefully, stay calm, and never blame the child. Thank the child for telling you, reassure them of your support, and let them know that you believe them.
Immediately following your conversation, it is imperative to file a report. There are multiple ways to file a report.
Either law enforcement or CPS can connect you with the Children’s Advocacy Center. Parents and caregivers can also contact the Center directly to request assessment services if they have concerns about a child’s behavior, questions about normal development, or suspect that their child has been sexually abused.
